La stabilité du navire, clé de voûte de l'architecture navale, est un vaste domaine qui reflète toute la complexité des navires.
Le présent ouvrage en présente tous les aspects. Le livre traite d'abord de la théorie de la stabilité. Puis il présente la réglementation s'appliquant aux navires de commerce, en état intact et après avarie. L'approche probabiliste de la stabilité après avarie est expliquée en détail. Une partie, plus particulièrement destinée au marin, présente la stabilité d'un point de vue pratique à bord. Différentes méthodes numériques pour calculer les principales grandeurs de stabilité sont proposées.
L'exposé est illustré par plus de 200 schémas et photographies techniques. Un dernier chapitre rassemble des exercices d'application avec des corrigés détaillés. Pour le lecteur qui maîtriserait imparfaitement certains prérequis mathématiques et physiques nécessaires, une annexe dédiée les présente succinctement et clairement.
Conçu pour tous les élèves ingénieurs et ingénieurs en architecture navale ou en ingénierie offshore, l'ouvrage est autosuffisant pour maîtriser le sujet. Pour leur part, le marin et l'armateur y trouveront les éléments nécessaires pour organiser le suivi rigoureux de la stabilité de leur navire en toutes circonstances, y compris dans des situations d'avarie ou d'échouement.
François Grinnaert, capitaine de corvette, dirige le groupement d'instruction navire et sécurité à l'Ecole navale et y enseigne la stabilité et la propulsion navale aux élèves officiers. Jean-Marc Laurens, enseignant-chercheur à l'ENSTA Bretagne, y enseigne la stabilité du navire et l'hydrodynamique navale.
