De Hilbert à Girard, en passant par Geltand et Grothendieck, nombre de grands mathématiciens ont, en l'espace d'un siècle, obtenu des résultats aussi spectaculaires que profonds. Ce que peu d'historiens ou philosophes des mathématiques ont perçu, c'est que ces résultats sont les som-mets escarpés d'un puissant massif qui ne dit pas son nom. Ces mathématiciens affirment en réalité un nouveau constructivisme qui témoigne d'un renouveau du structuralisme mathéma-tique. Alors que les mathématiques modernes nous ont appris comment construire toute forme d'action (disons des fonctions) à partir d'observables (disons des points), les mathématiques contemporaines nous ont montré comment, grâce à différents théorèmes de représentation, nous pouvons réciproquement reconstruire les espaces d'observables à partir de la seule notion d'action. Cet ouvrage poursuit une triple ambition. Il vient d'abord combler une lacune : la relative indigence de la littérature philosophique consacrée à ce constructivisme représentationnaliste. Il avance ensuite une thèse structuraliste en proposant de rassembler les dualités géométrie/algèbre sous une structure mathématique unifiée appelée dualité d'Isbell. Il montre enfin comment ce constructivisme peut être fécond pour les sciences appliquées, en proposant de revisiter deux théories dans deux champs disciplinaires différents : la théorie de l'équilibre général (économie) et la théorie du problème (épistémologie).
Auteurs :Préfacier Auteur Arnaud Valence est docteur en philosophie de l'université Lyon 3 et docteur en économie de l'Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales (Paris).
