La chimie organique joue un rôle essentiel dans notre quotidien : les dérivés du pétrole, les lipides, les hormones, les médicaments, ainsi que les fibres naturelles et synthétiques sont constitués principalement de composés organiques. Cette science relativement jeune (environ 200 ans) évolue très rapidement et intervient à tous les niveaux de la vie courante, comme le montrent les nombreux encadrés qui illustrent son importance en médecine, agriculture ou dans l'alimentation ainsi que son rôle dans les organismes vivants.
L'ouvrage de Paula Bruice est un livre complet contenant en un seul volume richement illustré toute la chimie organique de la licence. Tous les concepts sont introduits à travers les exemples de propriétés des composés et leurs utilisations. Les mécanismes de réactions sont présentés de façon détaillée et mis en valeur dans des schémas particulièrement pédagogiques qui font ressortir les caractéristiques de chaque étape. L'accent est mis sur les principes généraux pouvant être appliqués dans de nombreux contextes au moyen de solutions fondées sur le raisonnement plutôt que sur la mémorisation.
Chaque chapitre commence par une liste d'objectifs d'apprentissage ; il se termine par un résumé du cours et la synthèse portant sur les réactions introduites. De nombreux exercices sont intégrés au texte pour permettre d'acquérir des automatismes et d'autoévaluer ses connaissances sur chaque section avant de passer à la suivante. Certains problèmes sont accompagnés d'une solution détaillée et la plupart des chapitres comptent au moins une « stratégie de résolution de problèmes ».

Elle a reçu de nombreuses distinctions pour la qualité de son enseignement.
Carl Ouellet est chercheur en biochimie et enseignant. Il vit et travaille au Canada.
Jean-Marie Gagnon est chimiste, enseignant au Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel de Lanaudière à l'Assomption, au Canada. Il est auteur de nombreux ouvrages de chimie et de pédagogie des sciences.
